Thursdays County Council meetings saw the approving of the Council Plan for the next three years. This plan details how the County Council will deal with the issues facing Cumbria. Peter Thornton proposed an amendment which would have led to more economic development in Eden and South Lakeland.
Peter said, "These areas cannot survive on Tourism and Hill Farming"
He called for an encouragement of the renewable energy industry (example: Gilkes water turbine manufacturer in Kendal) and for a "Whole County" approach to economic development. Also for more partnerships with the University of Cumbria who are already looking at renewable energy projects.
Liberal Democrat members supported this but it was voted out by a block vote of Conservative and Labour members, most of whom come from the West or the North of Cumbria.
